もとの邸町の、荒果てた土塀が今もそのままになっている。……雪が消えて、まだ間もない、乾いたばかりの――山国で――石のごつごつした狭い小路が、霞みながら一条煙のように、ぼっと黄昏れて行く。 弥生の末から、ちっとずつの遅速はあっても、花は一時に咲くので、その一ならびの塀の内に、桃、紅梅、椿も桜も、あるいは満開に、あるいは初々しい花に、色香を装っている。石垣の草には、蕗の薹も萌えていよう。特に桃の花を真先に挙げたのは、むかしこの一廓は桃の組といった組屋敷だった、と聞くからである。その樹の名木も、まだそっちこちに残っていて麗に咲いたのが……こう目に見えるようで、それがまたいかにも寂しい。 二条ばかりも重って、美しい婦の虐げられた――旧藩の頃にはどこでもあり来りだが――伝説があるからで。 通道というでもなし、花はこの近処に名所さえあるから、わざとこんな裏小路を捜るものはない。日中もほとんど人通りはない。妙齢の娘でも見えようものなら、白昼といえども、それは崩れた土塀から影を顕わしたと、人を驚かすであろう。 その癖、妙な事は、いま頃の日の暮方は、その名所の山へ、絡繹として、花見、遊山に出掛けるのが、
