かつてある人の言葉に「虚子の俳話は俗談平話のうちに俳諧の大乗を説くものなり」とあったことは我が意を得た言である。近時は平易にいってすむことを高遠めかしく説くことが流行である。私はそれに与しない。 大徳智識の法話に「仮名法語」なるものがある。婦女老幼にも判るようにと仏の大道を仮名交じりの俗談平話に説くのである。読者この書をもって俳諧の仮名法語として見られよ。 （ホトトギス大正二年十一月号以下掲載・虚子講述）
