Pagera Editor's Note

This anthology, published in a revised edition in 1900 with critical and biographical introductions by Epiphanius Wilson, brings together five classics of Chinese literature in English translation. It contains the Analects of Confucius in twenty books, selected books of the sayings of Mencius, a selection of odes from the Shi-King (Book of Poetry), and the Travels of Fa-Hien, a Buddhist monk's record of his pilgrimage from China to India around 400 CE. It ends with The Sorrows of Han, a Yuan dynasty drama about Wang Zhaojun, a Han court lady surrendered to a northern khan.
