Pagera Editor's Note

Boethius (about 480 to 524), a Roman statesman and philosopher in the service of the Ostrogothic king Theodoric, wrote The Consolation of Philosophy in prison while awaiting execution for treason. In five books of alternating prose and verse, Lady Philosophy leads the grieving prisoner to reflect on fortune, happiness, the highest good, providence and free will. This 1918 Loeb edition prints the Latin text with an English translation, using the 1609 version by I. T. revised by H. F. Stewart. It also includes the five Theological Tractates, short treatises on the Trinity, goodness and substance, the Catholic faith and the person of Christ, translated by Stewart and E. K. Rand.
