Pagera Editor's Note

The Essence of Buddhism is a short anthology of Buddhist sayings compiled by E. M. Bowden, with a preface by Edwin Arnold, author of The Light of Asia; this text is the 1922 Haldeman-Julius pocket edition. Bowden explains that he did not set out to present Buddhism as a system, but to gather its moral teachings, especially those urging compassion and mercy toward animals. The brief extracts come from many sources, canonical and later, including the Dhammapada, the Sutta-Nipata, the Jatakamala, the Lalita Vistara, the Questions of King Milinda and Chinese Buddhist texts, drawing largely on translations in the Sacred Books of the East.
