Pagera Editor's Note

This volume collects Julius Caesar's own commentaries on his wars in the English translation by W. A. Macdevitt, published in Everyman's Library in 1915 with an introduction by Thomas De Quincey. The Gallic War, written in the third person, recounts in seven books Caesar's campaigns in Gaul from 58 to 52 BC, including his crossings of the Rhine and his expeditions to Britain; an eighth book, ascribed to Aulus Hirtius, completes the story. Three books on the Civil War follow, describing Caesar's struggle with Pompey and the senate from 49 BC. An index of proper names closes the volume.
