Michel de Montaigne's Essays, first published in 1580 and enlarged in later editions, gave the essay its name as a form of candid self-examination. The essays range from short pieces on sorrow and idleness to longer ones such as Of the Education of Children, the Apology for Raimond Sebond and the closing essay, Of Experience.
