Pagera Editor's Note

Stories from Thucydides is H. L. Havell's prose retelling of the main episodes of Thucydides' history of the Peloponnesian War, fought between Athens and Sparta from 431 to 404 BC. A prologue sketches the growth of Athenian power after the Persian Wars. The stories then follow the quarrel of Corinth and Corcyra, the surprise attack on Plataea, the plague at Athens, the naval victories of Phormio, the revolt of Lesbos, the fall of Plataea, the capture of Spartans on Sphacteria and the campaigns of Brasidas. After an uneasy peace come the Athenian expedition to Sicily and its disastrous end, with a short epilogue.
