Pagera Editor's Note

This volume, published in London by David Nutt in 1905 with an introduction by Henry Cust, brings together two works by Niccolo Machiavelli in early English translations: The Art of War, translated by Peter Whitehorne in 1560, and The Prince, translated by Edward Dacres in 1640. The Art of War is a dialogue on how armies should be raised, trained and led, in which Machiavelli argues for citizen soldiers rather than mercenaries. The Prince advises a ruler on how to win and keep power. Cust's long introduction discusses Machiavelli's life and thought.
