John Addington Symonds's Studies of the Greek Poets is a series of critical essays on Greek poetry, first published in England in two series in the 1870s. This is the first volume of the American edition in two volumes (Harper, 1880), for which Symonds rearranged and revised the chapters. It covers the periods of Greek literature, mythology, Achilles and the Iliad, the women of Homer, Hesiod, the philosophical poets Parmenides and Empedocles, the gnomic poets, the satirists, the lyric poets, Pindar, Aeschylus and Sophocles. Symonds combines literary history and criticism with many translated passages.
