Pagera Editor's Note

The Philosophy of Spinoza is a volume of selections from Baruch Spinoza edited by Joseph Ratner, whose preface is dated 1926. To make Spinoza easier for general readers, Ratner took the Ethics out of its geometrical form and arranged passages by topic, using White's translation of the Ethics and Elwes's translations of the Theologico-Political Treatise, the Political Treatise and the Improvement of the Understanding, with selections from the letters. After a life of Spinoza and an introduction, the chapters cover superstition, scripture, prophecy, miracles, God, mind and knowledge, the emotions, human bondage and freedom, the state, freedom of thought and speech, and the intellectual love of God.
