明治時代の劇を研究する人々の参考にもなろうかと思って、左の演劇年表を作ってみた。勿論完全な物ではないが、先ずこのくらいの事は知っていても好かろうという程度で編集したのである。但しその年表が東京だけにとどまって、関西方面まで手が廻らないのは、編者が関西劇界の事情をよく諳んじていないがためである。 明治の初年は、江戸から東京へ移った過渡時代で、編入すべき事項も頗る多いが、ここにはその大体を記すにとどめて置く。あまり繁瑣にわたることを避けたためである。（岡本綺堂）
