ソーロー Thoreau の『ウォールデン―森の生活』（Walden, or Life in the Woods）はアメリカの代表的古典の一つである。そのうちに盛られた精神は今日われわれの耳目にふれてつくられるアメリカという概念からはだいぶ懸けはなれているように見えるが、実はその基盤によこたわる大きな要素の一つであって、こういう要素を見落としてはわれわれのアメリカという概念には重大な欠陥がのこされるであろう。この書物はまた人類共通の古典である。このように自然と人事とを見、感じ、考え、生きた人の誠実で刻銘な記録は世界の人間の絶えざる反省と刺戟と慰めとの源であらねばならない。現代人は追いたてられるような足どりで、思いつめた眼つきでどこに往くつもりであろうか。われわれは「簡素な生活、高き想い」の実践者ソーローとともに sober（しらふ）になり、単純に考え、大地に足をつけた生き方をする必要がありはしないか。もちろん、彼の時代と環境とはわれわれのそれではなく、そのままの形で学ぶことはできないが。 ソーローは一八四五年七月四日（米国独立祭の日）に自分の住んでいたコンコードの町から南方一マイル半の
