忘却は人間の有する最大の幸福である。私達の目まぐるしい生活が、あらゆる感情の綯い交じったその日その日が、有りの儘に私達の在る限り、胸の中にたたまれてあるとしたら、それを負うて歩まねばならぬ人の運命はいかに悲惨なものだろうか。 雑然たる生活の断片を紙に残すのは、この意味に於て明らかに矛盾である。しかもそれを敢えてするのは私の過去に於てアルプスの雪の間に送った月日が、そのいずれの瞬間を思い出しても何の悔ゆることのない、白日に露すとも何等不安を感じない生活であったのを確かめているからである。 山に対する時私は云い知らぬ喜びを覚える。しかし読者はこの日記によって同じ感じを得ることが無いかも知れない、がそれはあながち私の負うべき責ではあるまい。何となれば、山のささやくは自然の声であって、言葉は竟に人の心に過ぎないからである。私は明らかにその声を聴く、しかしそれを表わす言葉の無いのを如何にしよう。只この日記が、偉大なる山岳を汚損する如き傾向を、僅かなりとも読者の心に与えなければ、私はそれを以て充分に満足する。 大正十一年七月著者
