ジイド全集ももうあと三冊で完了する。寔によく読まれよく評されて来た。今更私なぞがジイドのことを書くにも当るまい。ジイドのことを書けとて与られた紙面ではあるが、そのやうなわけで今はよもやまの話をさせて貰はうと思ふのである。 ※ ソクラテスからジイド迄、いやもつと前からジイド迄かも知れぬ、僅々七十年間に、一とわたり読破した我が日本の力といふものは、世にも恐ろしい力である。だがまた振返つて考へてみると、そこには可なりな消化不良がないとは云へぬ。扨日本の力が偉大であることに関しては、誰も異論のあらうわけはないから、その方はそれとして今日はその消化不良の方を論じて見たいと思ふ。 御覧の通りに僅々七十年間に、ソクラテスからジイド迄読破することが出来たといふのは、もとより負けじ魂に由るものであるが、注意すべきは、その負けじ魂といふよりかも、我等が粗朴であつたからである。何故かといふに、我等がもつと粗朴でないものであつたとしたら、かくも尨大な文献の前に、突然身を置いた我等として、その一冊一冊に取掛からうとするまへに、かくも尨大な文献の前に突如連れて来られたといふ我等の運命に就いて先づ考へようとしたであ
