Pagera Editor's Note

From a stable corner in a sweltering post town, a single fly watches a dying woman's mother, lovers in flight, and a daydreaming country gentleman board the day's horse cart. A startling parable of fate.

Author

横光利一

Yokomitsu Riichi (1898-1947) was a Japanese novelist who, with Kawabata Yasunari, led the Shinkankakuha or New Sensationalist school. Works such as Heads and Bellies and Machine pushed Japanese prose toward a style built on perception rather than plot, and for a time he was called the god of the literary world.
