Pagera Editor's Note

David Hume published An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals in 1751, recasting ideas from the third book of his Treatise of Human Nature, and he later judged it the best of all his writings. Hume argues that moral judgments rest finally on sentiment rather than on reason alone, and that the qualities we call virtues are those useful or agreeable to their possessor or to others. He examines benevolence, justice, political society and the reasons why utility pleases. This text is a 1912 reprint of the 1777 edition, with nine sections and four appendices on moral sentiment, self-love, justice and verbal disputes.
