Pagera Editor's Note

Michel de Montaigne's Essays, first published in 1580 and enlarged in later editions, gave the essay its name as a form of candid self-examination. This complete edition gives all three books, 107 essays in all, in Charles Cotton's translation of 1685 to 1686 as revised and edited by William Carew Hazlitt in 1877. Hazlitt's preface, a life of Montaigne and his letters come first. The essays range from short pieces on sorrow and idleness to longer ones such as Of the Education of Children, the Apology for Raimond Sebond and the closing essay, Of Experience.
