Pagera Editor's Note

On War is the treatise on military theory by the Prussian general Carl von Clausewitz, left unfinished at his death in 1831 and published by his widow from 1832. This English version is the translation by Colonel J. J. Graham, preceded by an editorial introduction. In eight books Clausewitz examines the nature of war, the theory of war, strategy, the combat, military forces, defence, attack and the plan of war. He describes war as a continuation of policy by other means, and stresses friction, chance, moral forces and the dependence of military aims on political ones.
