Pagera Editor's Note

Walt Whitman's Complete Prose Works, collected in 1892, brings together Specimen Days and Collect, November Boughs and Good-Bye My Fancy. Specimen Days is a loose diary and memoir that moves from his family background and youth on Long Island and in Brooklyn to his years visiting wounded soldiers in the Civil War hospitals of Washington, the death of Lincoln, and later nature notes written while he recovered from illness. The Collect includes Democratic Vistas, his essay on the promise and failings of American democracy and the literature it needs, together with his prefaces to Leaves of Grass and other essays.
