「メッセンジャー博士記念講義」は「文明の進化」を取り扱うものであり病気がこの文明の進化において重要な役割を果たしていることは疑いもない。物質的な過程である病気と人類の心の崇高な産物である文明の両者以上に異なる２現象は他にない。しかしこれらの間の関係はきわめて明らかである。 病気が生物学的な過程であることは今日ではよく知られている。人間は正常の刺激にたいして正常の生理的な反応でもって応答する。人間は条件の変化にたいして高度の適応性を持っている。我々は休息しているときでも激しい運動をしている時でも海面レベルでも高山でも暑い熱帯でも寒い極地でも健康に暮らすことができる。人体はある程度まで呼吸、循環、代謝などを変化する条件に適応させることができる。刺激が生体の適応能力を量的または質的に超えると生体の反応はもはや正常ではなく異常すなわち病的である。これらの反応は病気の症状であり傷ついた臓器の働きであり障害に打ち克とうとする防衛機構である。病気とは異常刺激にたいする生体またはその部分の異常反応の総和である。 しかし病気は個人にとって生物学的な過程であるだけではなく体験であり全生涯に非常に深刻な影響
