Pagera Editor's Note
The Nicomachean Ethics is Aristotle's principal work on ethics, composed in the fourth century BC. Starting from the question of what the highest human good is, Aristotle identifies it with happiness, understood as activity of the soul in accordance with virtue, and explains moral virtue as a settled disposition lying in a mean between excess and deficiency. Later books treat voluntary action, justice, practical wisdom, weakness of will, and friendship, and Book X weighs pleasure and the life of contemplation. This edition presents all ten books in English, with an introduction by J. A. Smith and notes.
