Pagera Editor's Note

Aristotle's Politics, composed in the fourth century BC, carries the inquiry of his Ethics into how people can live well from the individual to the city-state. Its eight books begin with the household, slavery, and the claim that man is by nature a political animal; they then examine earlier ideal constitutions, including Plato's, define the citizen, and classify constitutions as kingship, aristocracy, and polity, with their corrupt forms tyranny, oligarchy, and democracy. Later books analyze the causes of revolution and describe the best state and its education. This is William Ellis's translation in the Everyman's Library edition first issued in 1912, with an introduction.
