Pagera Editor's Note
Karl Marx published A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy in 1859 as the first instalment of a larger economic treatise, a plan he later recast as Capital (1867). This is N. I. Stone's English translation (Chicago, 1904), made from the second German edition. Its preface contains Marx's classic short statement of the materialist conception of history, in which the economic structure of society underlies its legal and political institutions. The two chapters analyse the commodity and money, with historical notes on earlier theories of value and money. An appendix adds Marx's unfinished Introduction of 1857, first published after his death.
