Pagera Editor's Note
Francis Bacon first published his Essays in 1597 as a slim book of ten pieces and kept enlarging them over his lifetime. This text follows the final edition of 1625, The Essays or Counsels, Civil and Moral, with fifty-eight essays, followed by the unfinished fragment Of Fame. In compact, aphoristic prose Bacon writes on private life and public affairs alike: truth, death, revenge, adversity, marriage, envy, love, friendship, ambition, travel, gardens, studies, riches and the conduct of statesmen. His advice is practical and often worldly, shaped by his long career in law and government.
