Pagera Editor's Note

Francis Bacon published The Advancement of Learning in 1605, addressing it to King James I. In the first of its two books he defends the value of learning against the objections of theologians, politicians and the faults of scholars themselves. In the second he surveys the whole field of human knowledge, divided by the faculties of memory, imagination and reason into history, poetry and philosophy, and points out where knowledge is deficient and new work is needed. Bacon later expanded the book in Latin as De Augmentis Scientiarum (1623). This text follows an 1893 Cassell edition with an introduction.
