Pagera Editor's Note

Alexis de Tocqueville published the first volume of Democracy in America in 1835, after travelling through the United States in 1831 and 1832. Struck above all by the general equality of conditions, he set out to explain how American democracy works. This volume covers the geography of North America and the origins of the Anglo-Americans, the sovereignty of the people, township and state government, the judiciary, the federal constitution, parties, the press and political associations. Later chapters weigh the advantages of democracy, the tyranny of the majority and the forces that restrain it, and end with a study of the future of the three races in the United States.
