Pagera Editor's Note

This second volume of G. C. Macaulay's 1890 translation of the Histories of Herodotus contains Books Five to Nine, the account of the Persian Wars themselves. Book Five tells of the Ionian Revolt against Persia and the part Athens played in it, and Book Six follows Darius's response and the Athenian victory at Marathon. Books Seven to Nine narrate Xerxes' great invasion of Greece: the stand at Thermopylae, the sea battles of Artemisium and Salamis, and the final Greek victories at Plataea and Mycale. Herodotus wrote in the fifth century BC, and Cicero called him the father of history.
