Pagera Editor's Note

The Histories of Herodotus, written in the fifth century BC, inquire into the causes and course of the great conflict between the Greeks and the Persian Empire. This first volume of G. C. Macaulay's English translation, published in 1890, contains Books One to Four, each named after one of the Muses. Book One tells of Croesus of Lydia and the rise of Persia under Cyrus; Book Two is a long description of Egypt, its customs and its history; Book Three covers Cambyses' conquest of Egypt and the accession of Darius; and Book Four describes the Scythians and Libya and Darius's campaign against Scythia.
