Pagera Editor's Note
This is the sixth edition of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species, published in 1872 and generally regarded as the definitive edition. The theory of evolution by natural selection, first presented in 1859, is set out here in fifteen chapters, preceded by an historical sketch of earlier opinion on the origin of species. Darwin covers variation, the struggle for existence and natural selection, and adds a new chapter answering miscellaneous objections to his theory, notably those of St. George Mivart. Later chapters treat instinct, hybridism, the geological record, geographical distribution and classification, ending with a recapitulation and conclusion.
