Pagera Editor's Note
Moral Philosophy: Ethics, Deontology and Natural Law is a manual by the English Jesuit Joseph Rickaby, written in the Catholic scholastic tradition and drawing on Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas. This text is the fourth edition of 1918. It moves from ethics proper, on happiness as the end of life, human acts, passions, habits and virtues, to deontology, on moral obligation, eternal law, conscience, sanction and a critique of utilitarianism. It then applies natural law to duties toward God, the preservation of life, truthfulness, charity, rights, marriage, property and the state, where it attacks the theories of Hobbes and the social contract.
