描かれた花 有島武郎 ＊ 色彩について繊細極まる感覚を持つた一人の青年が現はれた。彼れは普通の写真を見て、黒白の濃淡を凝視することによつて、写された物体の色彩が何んであつたかを易々と見分けるといふことである。この天賦の敏感によつて彼れは一つの大きな発明をしたが、私のこゝに彼れについて語らうとするのはそのことではない。彼れがいつたと称せられる言葉の中に、私に取つて暗示の深い一つの言葉があつた、それを語らうとするのである。 その言葉といふのは、彼れによれば、普通に云はれている意味に於て、自然の色は画家の色より遥かに美しくない、これである。 この言葉は逆説の如く、又誤謬の如く感ぜられるかも知れないと思ふ。何故ならば昔から今に至るまで、画家その人の殆ど凡てが、自然の美を驚嘆してやまなかつたから。而してその自然を端的に表現することの如何に難事であるかを力説してやまなかつたから。それ故私達は色彩の専門家なる人々の所説の一致をそのまゝ受け入れて、自然は凡ての人工の美の総和よりも更らに遥かに美しいとうなづいてゐた。而してそれがさう見えねばやまなかつた。如何に精巧なる絵具も、如何に精巧に配置されたその絵
