溺れかけた兄妹 有島武郎 土用波という高い波が風もないのに海岸に打寄せる頃になると、海水浴に来ている都の人たちも段々別荘をしめて帰ってゆくようになります。今までは海岸の砂の上にも水の中にも、朝から晩まで、沢山の人が集って来て、砂山からでも見ていると、あんなに大勢な人間が一たい何所から出て来たのだろうと不思議に思えるほどですが、九月にはいってから三日目になるその日には、見わたすかぎり砂浜の何所にも人っ子一人いませんでした。 私の友達のＭと私と妹とはお名残だといって海水浴にゆくことにしました。お婆様が波が荒くなって来るから行かない方がよくはないかと仰有ったのですけれども、こんなにお天気はいいし、風はなしするから大丈夫だといって仰有ることを聞かずに出かけました。 丁度昼少し過ぎで、上天気で、空には雲一つありませんでした。昼間でも草の中にはもう虫の音がしていましたが、それでも砂は熱くって、裸足だと時々草の上に駈け上らなければいられないほどでした。Ｍはタオルを頭からかぶってどんどん飛んで行きました。私は麦稈帽子を被った妹の手を引いてあとから駈けました。少しでも早く海の中につかりたいので三人は気息
