小作人への告別 有島武郎 八月十七日私は自分の農場の小作人に集会所に集まってもらい、左の告別の言葉を述べた。これはいわば私の私事ではあるけれども、その当時の新聞紙が、それについて多少の報道を公けにしたのであるが、また聞きのことでもあるから全く誤謬がないとはいえない。こうなる以上は、私の所言を発表して、読者にお知らせしておくのが便利と考えられる。 農繁の時節にわざわざ集まってくださってありがたく思います。しかし今日はぜひ諸君に聞いていただかねばならぬ用事があったことですから悪しからず許してください。 私がこの農場を何とか処分するとのことは新聞にも出たから、諸君もどうすることかといろいろ考えておられたろうし、また先ごろは農場監督の吉川氏から、氏としての考えを述べられたはずだから、私の処分についての、だいたいの様子はわかっておられたかとも思います。けれどもこの事柄は私の口ずから申し出ないと落ち着かない種類のものと信じますから、私は東京から出て来ました。 第一、第二の農場を合して、約四百五十町歩の地積に、諸君は小作人として七十戸に近い戸数をもっています。今日になってみると、開墾しうべきところは
