Kōda Rohan (1867-1947) was a Japanese novelist whose prose drew on classical Chinese learning and Buddhist thought. The Five-Storied Pagoda, his best known work, follows a stubborn carpenter determined to build alone. With Ozaki Kōyō he dominated the Meiji literary scene, a period the two are said to have shared.

五重塔 幸田露伴 其一 木理美しき槻胴、縁にはわざと赤樫を用ひたる岩畳作りの長火鉢に対ひて話し敵もなく唯一人、少しは淋しさうに坐り居る三十前後の女、男のやうに立派な眉を何日掃ひしか剃つたる痕の青と、見る眼も覚むべき雨後の山の色をとゞめて翠のひ一トしほ床しく、鼻筋つんと通り眼尻キリヽと上り、洗ひ髪をぐる／＼と酷く丸めて引裂紙をあしらひに一本簪でぐいと留めを刺した色気無の様はつくれど、憎いほど烏黒にて艶ある髪の毛の一ト綜二綜後れ乱れて、浅黒いながら渋気の抜けたる顔にかゝれる趣きは、年増嫌ひでも褒めずには置かれまじき風体、我がものならば着せてやりたい好みのあるにと好色漢が随分頼まれもせぬ詮議を蔭では為べきに、さりとは外見を捨てゝ堅義を自慢にした身の装り方、柄の選択こそ野暮ならね高が二子の綿入れに繻子襟かけたを着て何所に紅くさいところもなく、引つ掛けたねんねこばかりは往時何なりしやら疎い縞の糸織なれど、此とて幾度か水を潜つて来た奴なるべし。 今しも台所にては下婢が器物洗ふ音ばかりして家内静かに、他には人ある様子もなく、何心なくいたづらに黒文字を舌端で嬲り躍らせなどして居し女、ぷつりと其を噛み切
