Pagera Editor's Note

This book is Sir Roger L'Estrange's English abstract of the moral writings of the Roman Stoic Seneca, here in an 1882 Chicago edition. Rather than translating whole treatises, L'Estrange gathered Seneca's ethical teaching under plain headings, as he explains in his address to the reader, which is followed by a short account of Seneca's life. The sections cover benefits, meaning how to give, receive, and repay kindness; the happy life and the place of virtue and reason in it; anger, its nature and cure, together with cruelty; and clemency, especially in rulers.
