Pagera Editor's Note
Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, first published in 1881, is the last and fullest of his three autobiographies; this text follows the Park Publishing Company edition of Hartford, with an introduction by George L. Ruffin. Douglass retells his birth and youth in slavery in Talbot County, Maryland, and here reveals for the first time how he escaped in 1838. He then follows his life as a free man: anti-slavery work in America and Britain, his newspaper, the Underground Railroad, his relations with John Brown, recruiting Black regiments for the Civil War, meetings with Presidents Lincoln and Johnson, and his federal appointments up to 1881.
