読書八境 市島春城 古語に居は気を移すとあるが、居所に依つて気分の異なるは事実である。読書も境に依つて其味が異なるのは主として気分が違ふからで、白昼多忙の際に読むのと、深夜人定まる後に読むのとに相違があり、黄塵万丈の間に読むのと、林泉幽邃の地に読むのとではおのづから異なる味がある。忙中に読んで何等感興を覚えないものを間中に読んで感興を覚えることがあり、得意の時に読んで快とするものを失意の時読んで不快に感ずることもある。人の気分は其の境遇で異なるのみならず、四季朝夕其候其時を異にすれば亦同じきを得ない。随つて読書の味も亦異ならざるを得ないのである。今境に依り書味の異なるものを案じ、八目を選び、之を読書八境といふ。 一 羈旅 二 酔後 三 喪中 四 幽囚 五 陣営 六 病蓐 七 僧院 八 林泉 （一）羈旅は舟車客館其総べてを包羅するのであるが、多くの侶伴のある場合や極めて近距離の旅は別として、大体旅中は沈黙の続く時である。無聊遣る瀬のない時である。シンミリ書物に親しみ得るは此時であらねばならぬ。云ふまでもなく旅中には多くの書籍を携へ得ない。行李に収むるものは僅かに二三に過ぎぬ。書斎などでは
