Pagera Editor's Note

Nathaniel Hawthorne's whimsical 1835 sketch from Twice-Told Tales, in which the cast-iron Town Pump at the corner of Essex and Washington Streets in Salem holds forth in first person. The pump introduces itself as the chief officer of the municipality, lampoons the customers who come for a drink, recounts the local history of its watering spot from the Indian sagamores to the present, and delivers a rousing temperance speech in favor of cold water over rum. A masterclass in American Romantic personification.
