Pagera Editor's Note
This collection gathers thirteen essays by the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer (1788 to 1860) in the English translation of Mrs. Rudolf Dircks, with an introductory essay on his life and outlook. The pieces range from practical advice on authorship and style, reading and books, education, noise and thinking for oneself to essays on women, physiognomy, suicide, the emptiness of existence and the metaphysics of love. Two short dialogues treat religion and the indestructibility of our true being by death. All but one of the essays come from his late collection Parerga and Paralipomena (1851); The Metaphysics of Love is a chapter of The World as Will and Representation.
