Pagera Editor's Note

This record contains Common Sense, the pamphlet Thomas Paine published in Philadelphia in January 1776, as printed in Volume I of Moncure Daniel Conway's edition of The Writings of Thomas Paine. Writing in plain, forceful prose, Paine argues that government is at best a necessary evil, attacks monarchy and hereditary succession, and urges the American colonies to declare independence from Britain at once rather than seek reconciliation. He also assesses America's strength to defend itself at sea and on land. The text includes the introduction, the four main sections and the appendix Paine added to the enlarged edition.
