Pagera Editor's Note

Hegel lectured on the history of philosophy many times from his years at Jena until his death in 1831, and the lectures were published posthumously from his notes and students' transcripts. This is the third and final volume of the English translation by E. S. Haldane and Frances H. Simson (1896). It covers medieval philosophy, including the Arabian philosophers, the Scholastics from Anselm to Occam, the revival of learning and the Reformation, and then modern philosophy from Bacon and Boehme through Descartes, Spinoza, Locke, Leibniz and Hume to Jacobi, Kant, Fichte and Schelling. Hegel treats this history as the progressive development of thought itself.
