Phänomenologie des Geistes (Phenomenology of Spirit), published in 1807, was Hegel's first major work, and this record presents the original German text. Hegel follows consciousness through a series of forms, from sense-certainty, perception and understanding to self-consciousness, with its well-known section on lordship and bondage, and then to reason, spirit, religion and finally absolute knowing. Along the way he discusses Stoicism, scepticism and the unhappy consciousness, ethical life, culture and alienation, the Enlightenment, absolute freedom and the Terror, and morality. A long preface sets out his view of philosophy as a scientific system.
