Pagera Editor's Note
Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection was published by John Murray in London in November 1859, and this is the text of that first edition. Darwin argues that species are not fixed but descend with modification from common ancestors, and that natural selection, acting on small inherited variations in the struggle for existence, is the main cause of this change. In fourteen chapters he moves from variation under domestication and in nature to instinct, hybridism, the fossil record, geographical distribution, and the classification and embryology of living things, before closing with a recapitulation and conclusion.
