Pagera Editor's Note
Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species, first published in November 1859, sets out the theory of evolution by natural selection. This text is the second edition, published by John Murray in 1860, which keeps the original fourteen-chapter arrangement and predates the revised sixth edition of 1872. Darwin moves from variation under domestication and in nature to the struggle for existence and natural selection, then answers the difficulties raised by instinct, hybridism and the imperfect geological record. He closes with geographical distribution, classification, embryology and rudimentary organs, and a recapitulation of the whole argument.
