Pagera Editor's Note

This is the first volume of Edward Gibbon's The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, the opening part of which was published in 1776. It contains chapters I to XV. Gibbon begins with the extent, prosperity and constitution of the empire under the Antonines, then follows the decline that began with Commodus: the sale of the empire to Didius Julianus, Severus and Caracalla, the civil wars of the third century, Persia and the German tribes, and the recoveries under Claudius, Aurelian and Diocletian, up to the reunion of the empire under Constantine. The volume ends with his chapter on the progress of the Christian religion.
