This second volume of Edward Gibbon's The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire contains chapters XVI to XXVI and covers the fourth century. It opens with Roman policy toward the Christians from Nero to Constantine, then follows the founding of Constantinople, the character of Constantine and his sons, the reign of Constantius, Constantine's conversion and the disputes over Arianism. Gibbon gives particular attention to the emperor Julian, his attempt to restore paganism and his death on campaign in Persia, before turning to Jovian and Valentinian, the division of the empire, the advance of the Huns and the Gothic war.
