Pagera Editor's Note

This third volume of Edward Gibbon's The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire contains chapters XXVII to XXXVIII, on the collapse of Roman rule in the West. It begins with the reign of Theodosius, the destruction of paganism and the division of the empire between his sons, then follows Alaric and the Goths to the sack of Rome, the Vandal conquest of Africa and the invasions of Attila. After the extinction of the Western Empire, Gibbon describes the conversion of the barbarians to Christianity and the reign of Clovis, and closes with his General Observations on the Fall of the Roman Empire in the West.
