Kunikida Doppo (1871-1908) was a Japanese novelist and poet. Musashino, his best known work, reads the woods outside Tokyo through the eyes of a reader of Wordsworth. He is regarded as an originator of Japanese naturalism and died of tuberculosis at thirty-six.

武蔵野 国木田独歩 一 「武蔵野の俤は今わずかに入間郡に残れり」と自分は文政年間にできた地図で見たことがある。そしてその地図に入間郡「小手指原久米川は古戦場なり太平記元弘三年五月十一日源平小手指原にて戦うこと一日がうちに三十余たび日暮れは平家三里退きて久米川に陣を取る明れば源氏久米川の陣へ押寄せると載せたるはこのあたりなるべし」と書きこんであるのを読んだことがある。自分は武蔵野の跡のわずかに残っている処とは定めてこの古戦場あたりではあるまいかと思って、一度行ってみるつもりでいてまだ行かないが実際は今もやはりそのとおりであろうかと危ぶんでいる。ともかく、画や歌でばかり想像している武蔵野をその俤ばかりでも見たいものとは自分ばかりの願いではあるまい。それほどの武蔵野が今ははたしていかがであるか、自分は詳わしくこの問に答えて自分を満足させたいとの望みを起こしたことはじつに一年前の事であって、今はますますこの望みが大きくなってきた。 さてこの望みがはたして自分の力で達せらるるであろうか。自分はできないとはいわぬ。容易でないと信じている、それだけ自分は今の武蔵野に趣味を感じている。たぶん同感の人も
