Pagera Editor's Note

This fourth volume of Edward Gibbon's The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire contains chapters XXXIX to XLVIII. It begins with Theodoric's Gothic kingdom of Italy and the fate of the philosopher Boethius, then turns to the age of Justinian: his reign and buildings, the conquests of his general Belisarius, and Belisarius's last victory and death. A long chapter on Roman jurisprudence follows, along with the Lombards in Italy, the wars with Persia and the church disputes over the nature of Christ. The volume ends with a rapid survey of the Byzantine emperors down to the Latin conquest of Constantinople.
